What is Panchakarma?
Panchakarma means "five actions". It is a set of classical Ayurvedic procedures used to clear what Ayurveda calls accumulated doshas and Ama (incompletely digested material) from the body, so that digestion, energy and routine can settle back towards balance. It is not a single massage or a spa package: it is a structured programme that the doctor adapts to your body, the season and your health.
The three stages
- Purvakarma, preparation. Usually a few days of light diet and digestive herbs (Deepana and Pachana), then oleation: medicated ghee or oil taken internally (Snehapana) and warm oil massage (Abhyanga) followed by herbal steam (Swedana).
- Pradhana karma, the main procedure. One or more of the five procedures, chosen by the doctor: Vamana (therapeutic emesis), Virechana (therapeutic purgation), Basti (medicated enema), Nasya (nasal therapy) and Raktamokshana (bloodletting, rarely used). Most people do not need all five; Virechana and Basti are the most commonly advised.
- Paschat karma, after care. A graded return to normal food (Samsarjana Krama) over several days, with routine and diet guidance so the benefit is not lost.
Who may consider it
People often ask about Panchakarma for a seasonal reset, sluggish digestion and heaviness, long-standing joint stiffness, skin concerns, or simply to restore routine after a stressful period. Whether it is suitable for you, and which procedure, is decided by the doctor after a consultation.
Seasonal timing
Ayurveda traditionally links procedures to the seasons (Ritucharya): Virechana is classically advised in Sharad (around September to November), when Pitta is high, and Vamana in Vasanta (spring) for Kapha. Your doctor will tell you whether now is a good time for you.
Cost
The cost depends on the procedures and the number of days. Our 7 day Panchakarma reset starts at ₹ TBC. You get the full plan and cost in writing before anything starts.
Questions people ask
How long does Panchakarma take?
Usually between 7 and 21 days, including preparation, the main procedure and the diet afterwards. The doctor sets the length after your consultation.
Do I need to stay at the clinic?
No. At Spandan, Panchakarma is done as daily visits. Some days take longer than others, and the doctor will tell you what to expect.
Is Panchakarma safe?
When it is planned by a qualified Ayurvedic doctor and the right procedures are chosen for you, it is a well established therapy. It is not suitable for everyone, which is why every programme starts with a consultation.
Can I continue my regular medicines?
Bring a list of everything you take. Ayurvedic care works alongside your regular doctor, and we never ask you to stop a prescribed medicine.
